Creation of City Center Amenities for Residents and Employees

The City should continue to add amenities and improvements to enhance the experience of living and working in the City Center.  Recent examples would be the construction of University Plaza, renovation of Public Square, the new A&E Parking Deck, and widening of the South Potomac sidewalks.  The 2008 Comprehensive Plan includes a Downtown Element that offers numerous ideas.  Those ideas and some others subsequently developed by staff include the following:

  • Develop additional landscaping and streetscape improvements
  • Develop children’s play areas
  • Develop walking tour maps of Hagerstown’s history
  • Support Central Library expansion
  • Support businesses that bring life to downtown after business hours
  • Support projects that enhance awareness of our history, arts and culture
  • Develop a marketing plan for Downtown
  • Complete comprehensive parking study
  • Create pocket parks where appropriate
  • Creation of a downtown hotel
  • Widen sidewalks in appropriate portions of the downtown for café’s
  • Support Discovery Station
