Greater Hagerstown is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the state and is among the fastest growing in the nation. In just the last decade, the city has experienced more residential construction than it has in the past 50 years. Between 2000 and 2007, the population of the City of Hagerstown grew by approximately 7.4%, surpassing both state and national averages.  With 1,850 housing units in various stages of development, the population is anticipated to increase by another 3% within the next 5 to 7 years. Adding to the city’s appeal is its exceptional safety. In 2004, Hagerstown’s crime rate was ranked 15th lowest in the nation, and the lowest in Maryland, for metropolitan areas of the same size (55,000-200,000).
