Thunder in the Square Rolls into City Center
9/20/2011
City Center, Hagerstown will be a hub for cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors the evening of September 30th, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with the first-ever Thunder in the Square event.
The Alsatia Club, which is celebrating its 100th year, is hosting Thunder in the Square which is also sponsored by the City of Hagerstown and the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“This whole idea stemmed from a great car show we had last year at Fairgrounds Park,” said James McCleaf, Mayor of Williamsport and Parade Chairman for the Alsatia Club’s Mummers’ Parade. “It went over so well that we really wanted to bring the event into City Center and expand it. Being that this is the 100th year of the Alsatia Club, we thought it would be a great way to celebrate the anniversary and gear-up of for the 87th Alsatia Mummers’ Parade.”
Registration will begin at 5:00 p.m. and the entry fee is just $5.00 (includes a dash plaque while supplies last). All participating vehicles can enter the area from Summit Avenue onto West Washington Street or from East Franklin Street onto North Potomac Street.
West Washington Street and South Potomac Street will be closed to regular traffic starting at 4:30 p.m. and East Washington Street and North Potomac Street will be closed at 5:00 p.m.
Vehicles will be separated into classes including: Best Original, Best Custom, Best Resto Mod, Best Import, Best Rat Rod, Best Motorcycle Antique, Best Motorcycle Custom and the Mayor’s Choice Award. All of the Thunder in the Square winners will be invited to participate in the 2011 Mummers’ Parade.
“We’re really excited about the winners being added to the parade line-up,” said McCleaf. “There is a general parade rule that cars that are fillers for the parade have to be pre-World War II era. This event will allow us to showcase some really cool vehicles that may not fall in that category.”
In conjunction with the event, the Maryland Theatre will hold a special Wind Down Friday. Entertainment will include the band The Cruisers from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Hagerstown Dance Band will also be in the square from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and other special guests will include the Hub City Lindy Hop, Miss Maryland 2011, and the Ali Ghan Shrine clowns and cars.
The Washington County Antique Tractor Club will give barrel cart rides, and Otterbein Church will be giving away free popcorn.
All of the proceeds from Thunder in the Square will benefit the Alsatia Club. The Alsatia Club annually hosts the Alsatia Mummers’ Parade, which is recognized as the East Coast’s largest nighttime parade. This year’s parade will be held on Saturday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m. The Club also supports several organizations throughout the community including but not limited to little league teams, a junior basketball league, the Parent-Child Center and several college scholarships.
